These tasks have been produced to help students with little experience of handling a mouse or inputting text. Some are very simple indeed. Some require an ability to decode short sentences. Only a few (grouped under Writing tasks) ask learners to attempt short writing tasks using their own vocabulary, spellings or sentence structure. A file can be uploaded quickly from the CD to individual computers or the resource can be stored in a folder on a student intranet.
Most of the files are in MS Word format. Some are “locked” to restrict the text management demands on learners. Tutors can adjust the content by selecting the Forms toolbar (from the View menu). It is then possible to unlock the file, amend the text as needed and lock the file again. Two MS Powerpoint files are also included and give simple alphabet and mouse-clicking practice.
 The files are grouped in eight sections including Forms, Syntax patterns, Vocabulary recognition, Posters and cards, Months, days, times and Alphabet letters and sounds. Most of the files use colour to give the screen a more attractive appearance. It is recognised that most IT learning centres will have only black and white printers. The colours chosen are dark enough to print clearly in black and white. For some of the posters and cards it would be good to try and save learners’ files to print out later in colour if possible. To help students avoid eye-strain problems the tasks all use relatively large print sizes.
